My Sleeping Darlings

I have a certain fascination with taking photos my children while they sleep. And I love to watch them sleep. I know that it has something to do with them being still and quiet, and experience seldom had while they are awake. It also provides me with a chance to pray for them, to remember all the beautiful things about being a mother to these three little ones. It is a beautiful show of trust. They have no fears, no worries, no cares that keep them from sleep.
Saoirse is a cuddler, she loves to be stroked and scratched, like a little kitten.

Carsten is my first child to sleep better with me holding him. Honestly, that was super comforting to me when Roman is gone. I would hold him until he fell asleep on me than lay him in his cradle.

Ethan talks in his sleep. When I have a chance to overhear him, it sounds like he has very exciting dreams, about fires, boats, and friends.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee, all through the night

Guardian angels God will send thee, all through the night.

Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping,

I my loved ones watch are keeping,
all through the night.

Merry Christmas my dears!
In the morning you will wake to lots of sweets
and gifts from those who love you.
Right now you are in deepest sleep
and you don't know how much I see
you are God's sweetest gifts to me.
Love, Mommy

Books for a Little Girl

She is always pulling books off the shelf and looking through them.
I can leave her in the crib with a stack of books and she will be content for ages reading to her dollies.

Her favorite books are the Eric Carle books.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
Her other favorite is a recently acquired copy of Corduroy, the lovable bear with the missing button. She does not sit still for me to read the story. She staggers up to under the weight of the giant board book, ready to turn the pages and babble out a tale on my lap.
I wish I knew the story she has so imaginatively created.

This is some of the books our family received for Christmas.
And with a gift card I bought the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie bookset from Costco, along with a copy of The Wizard of Oz. When I went to pay for it Saoirse was busy turning the pages, babbling away, much to the delight of the older folks in line behind us. The saga of voracious readers and library aficionados continues...

Building Your Vocabulary: Describing My Kids

The American's use of language is rather pathetic. I personally think that texting is sending us further down the slippery slope of weak language skills. Being something of a poet, as well as an avid reader (when time allows) I appreciate those who have a well-endowed vocabulary.

Around Christmas, our homes are enriched with the lyrics of ancients carols, beautifully describing the glorious gift of God. Then there are cheesy, modern limericks that attempt to capture a joyful spirit. And the same phrases used in every generic card and letter. It would be pleasant to hear a few more old terms, and unique descriptions come up in the Christmas cards and letters. So if I were to send out a Christmas letter (which I am not, just pictures) what unique words would I use to describe my children?

Ethan:
Inquisitive ~ given to asking questions
Accommodating ~ willing to help
Ardent ~ intensely eager
Emphatic ~ forceful or insistent

Saoirse:
Effervescent ~ bubbly, enthusiastic
Vivacious ~ lively and spirited
Warmhearted ~  affectionate and kind
Winsome ~ innocently charming

What words would you use to describe your children?

Little Red Riding Hood

The gift of photography (and the good camera) is in the hands of my mother. So I occasionally prevail upon her to take pictures of my children (a task she willingly endures). To mark Saoirse's first year of life I wanted to captured her red hair, and the fairy tale character of Red Riding Hood seemed to be a perfect subject. So I hand-sewed every detail of her flowing cape, made a batch of ginger cookies, and sent her to Nana's house (my mother-in-law's darling English style cottage in the woods.) Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day.

My Girly's Day!

One year with my little girl!
My freedom girl, my sweetheart of a baby!
My newborn girl, who came into the world so fast last September (a three hour labor).
How desperately I wanted her in my arms that night.
How I cried for her to be out, and suddenly she was, and as she slept I lay awake in wonder.
Now she is a vivacious, busy, smiling one year old.
She loves yarn and all things soft.
She has red hair that her daddy is so proud of (because it is from his grandma) and soft gray eyes.
Having a firstborn son made me a woman and a mother. He makes me proud and strong.
Having a daughter causes me to marvel about what it means to be female. She makes me gentle.
Saoirse Dawn ~ freedom in early light
She has a free spirit, a playful attitude, and general goodwill to bestow on all she meets.
Please God, may she grow up with Your love flowing through her.
May she be soft and gentle, strong and healthy, generous and joyous.
She has added to our family in many ways.
Everyday I am grateful for the time that I have with her, knowing it will be short and determining that it shall be good. For she is a good and perfect gift, created by Love, conceived in love, birthed in pain and joy.
Happy 1st Birthday, my girly-princess-Saoirse-Dawn-sweetheart!

Anne Bradstreet, Mother

Diverse children have their different natures: some are like flesh which nothing but salt will keep from putrefaction, some again like tender fruits that are best preserved with sugar. Those parents are wise that can fit their nurture according to their nature.

Sidenote: Happy Sweet Sixteen to my fun little sis-in-law Raydeemie!
And thanks for introducing Ethan to frogs.

Reading to my Children

No book is really worth reading at the age of 10 which is not equally worth reading at the age of 50. ~C.S.Lewis

I want my children to read, a lot. So I try to read to them on a daily basis. It has had the desired effect so far, they both love to look at books. Saoirse is just starting to turn pages, so very reading actually gets done, but she is learning to handle books. She likes the books that are as big as she is:
These books have beautiful illustrations with a variety of stories and poems from all cultures.

I loved looking through them when I was little and now Saoirse does too.

This is the only one I have, but someday I hope to have the rest.

Go to Amazon to find more of this great collection.

Currently the two books below are Ethan's favorite books.
The inscription in the front of my copy reads:
Dear Caitlin, Happy 5th Birthday! Love, Aunt Andrea
in her lovely script.
Some books are worth holding onto.

Ethan loves this collection of train stories (and I like it better than Thomas the Train.)

Our Adventures: Part 2

A large portion of our time in California was spent with my extended family. Only a few had seen Ethan, while almost no one had met Saoirse yet. It was so delightful to share my children with all my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. While Roman's family is scattered all through NW Montana (plus several other states, oh, and England), my relatives are further away. But I have a much smaller group for him to meet, than he has for me. (My kids are two out of 35 great-grandchildren on Roman's side of the fam.)
We stayed with my dad's parents in Livermore, California. I have spent a lot of nights there, and now my kids have too. We were all still recovering from colds during the first couple days, and Grandpa had pneumonia too. So we spent time drinking tea, watching cartoons, and chatting. Saoirse and Gigi (Great-Grandma) had wonderful chats.

On our way down to CA we stopped in Medford OR to visit my great-aunt and my dads cousins.

The house I grew up in, Brentwood CA.

I know somewhere there is a picture of me in Grandmas tub, very similar to this.
Ethan kept us all amused with his goofy ways. One morning he found a red beret that he quiet liked the look of.  He quietly sneaked out (it was only around 7 am, so not everyone was up yet) to where Jillian and Hayley were sleeping to ask them, with a cheesy one-eyed smile, if he was cute. When they confirmed his cuteness, he giggled and ran back to the bathroom where Laurel was showering. He managed to open the door and wander in to play with brushes and who knows what else. Laurel - who did not have her contacts in - said all she could see was a bright red blob bobbing up and down. It was then that I realized where he was, and with a mild scolding took him back to our room to look in the mirror and laugh at his cuteness.

Baby has to take a bath in Gigi's sink.

Great-grandpa has been playing golf for years. Ethan learned a few basic techniques in the backyard, which he continues to practice, with a great variety in balls and sticks.
We also saw both my dad's sisters, and two of my cousins during our stay.

Then we spent an afternoon with my mom's brother, the firefighter with a great swimming pool.

Every house we went to had a dog. Saoirse tried kiss them, while Ethan tried to ride them.

Playing dominoes with great-grandpa (this is my mom's stepdad aka one the best firefighters ever)

Saoirse got along well with all the grandpas and uncles. This is my moms other brother.

The Anderson branch of our family tree:

front row: my sisters, my wee ones, and yours truly.

After a week in the Bay Area we headed up to the wedding. My mom's sister Christine is 20 years younger than her and 15 months older than me. So when we heard she was engaged we all planned to be at the wedding in TwainHarte CA. On a lovely tree farm in the Sierra Nevada Mountains she shed the name Daskam for Vigilienzone, nearly 26 years after my mom went from Daskam to Carstensen.
It was a beautiful wedding and I as so happy to be there for the event. I really missed Roman during that day. Weddings just make me wish to be close to the one whom my soul loves.

He started the evening with a cute newsboy cap. But there was a bridge over a creek and something had to be thrown in, so in the absence of pebbles the cap was the alternative.

She always looks so adorable.
